GLOBE response to same-sex marriage poll result

Statement of response – ‘yes’ vote for same-sex marriage poll

“GLOBE is pleased to see the government’s same-sex marriage poll confirmed what we already knew – that the majority of Australians support marriage equality,” said GLOBE President Dan de Rochefort.

“While it’s exciting to see progress, there is still a difficult journey to marriage equality as legislation will be debated in parliament. Unfortunately our community must endure further scrutiny as same-sex marriage continues to be debated.”

“The LGBTI business community call on the government to now legislate marriage equality without delay.”

“GLOBE members want to see true marriage equality, and Melbourne’s LGBTI community do not want discriminatory laws made under the guise of ‘religious freedom’ or ‘freedom of speech’. True equality means that all people are treated with respect and dignity – regardless of sexual or gender identity.”

“As we celebrate this victory, we must not forget members of the LGBTI community who continue to face discrimination and difficulty everyday. Our Transgender, Intersex, non-binary and gender no-conforming friends face difficulties everyday for things as simple as a trip to the bathroom or a clothing store. GLOBE is committed to ensuring true equality and civil rights for all members of the LGBTI community.”

GLOBE, founded in 1992, is a bi-partisan not-for-profit member organisation for LGBTI professionals and business owners. Blended fruits, GLOBE’s premier networking event, is Victoria’s oldest and largest networking event for LGBTI professionals.
